Utah’s Calvin Whiting Called Up To USA Eagles For Summer Tour
HERRIMAN, Utah — Warriors’ center Calvin Whiting has been called up to the USA Eagles for the team’s summer tour in Ireland and England, the team announced Wednesday.
Whiting becomes the fifth Utah Warrior to join the Eagles on the summer tour and the sixth player to be called up to their respective national team. He joins Paul Mullen, Mika Kruse, Mikey Te’o and Michael Baska on the USA Eagles and Fraser Hurst on Rugby Canada as members of the Warriors to join their national teams on summer tour.
“I am extremely humbled by this opportunity I have to represent not only this country but also my family and this club,” said Whiting. “I cannot wait to test my skills and grow with the team as we take on 2 of the best rugby organizations in the world. Honestly, it’s the kind of stuff you dream about and I can’t believe it’s actually happening.”
“We are so excited for Calvin to be selected for this tour and it’s a testament to his hard work,” said Utah Warriors General Manager Brandon Sparks. “As a player who has played through several different competitions in the Utah Rugby Community, he is an example to other local players of what can be achieved.”
Whiting, a third-year center for the Warriors, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa before moving to Utah in 2011 where he graduated from Lone Peak High School in Alpine, Utah. The center studied at Brigham Young University where he also played rugby for the Cougars before joining the Warriors in 2019.
Whiting will make his second appearance for USA Rugby after making his debut against Chile in February of 2017. He joins the Eagles for their two summer matches in the United Kingdom, taking on England on July 4, and Ireland on July 10. The two matches will mark the first time the Eagles have played since Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan.
